Coach Mike Helmer's Lady Grizzly basketball team had just come off a huge road win at Barton County, and they were hoping to continue playing well against the last place Colby Lady Trojans. They did just that, playing well for all but the final five minutes of the first half, and annihilated Colby by 47 points, 84- 37. The Lady Grizzlies shot right through the Trojans' 2-3 zone defense, making 14 of 40 from beyond the three-point line and forced an astounding 36 turnovers. In fact, Colby's Tasha Wagoner had a triple-double, but in the oddest of fashions. Wagoner scored 15 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, but committed a mind-boggling 17 turnovers.
The Lady Grizzlies came out fast as Abby Fawcett, Wichita freshman, nailed two quick threes to get Butler going. Just like that it was 13-2 and the lead continued to grow. With about five minutes remaining in the half, Butler led 34-9. But then Colby caught fire and put together a run of their own, ending the first half, outscoring Butler 10-2. The Lady Grizzlies led 36-19 at the break. Despite committing 21 turnovers, Colby's zone slowed down Butler enough to hold the Grizzlies under 30% shooting.
In the second half, though, Butler put any doubt to rest as they again came out fast, and quickly pushed the lead past 20 points. Then 30. Then 40. And when the dust cleared, the Grizzlies outscored Colby 48-18 in the second stanza. While Fawcett scored 15 points all on threes in the first half, she put in six two-point field goals, mostly on fast break lay-ups. She finished with 27 points on 11 of 22 from the field. Two other Lady Grizzlies got into double figures in scoring. Alysia Hart, Goddard sophomore, had a big second half and finished with 16. Abby Henning, Wichita freshman, added 11.
Grizzly guard Paige Franklin, Dallas freshman, had a solid night with seven points, seven rebounds, and eight steals. She also dished out five assists. Butler ended with 27 steals in all. They assisted on 19 of their 30 field goals, one of the best ratios they have had all season. Head Coach Mike Helmer commented he was proud of the effort for all but the last stretch of the first half, and he liked how just about everybody who saw game action contributed in a positive way. The Lady Grizzlies have now won two games in a row, and are now 6-7 in the Jayhawk West and 12-15 overall.
