Butler Community College's L.W. Nixon Library and the Bradford Memorial Library announce the 2010 launch of One Book, One Community, a city-wide reading and discussion program that encourages area residents to read the same book at the same time. For this year's One Book, One Community, the book selected follows the lead of the Kansas Center for the Book in choosing "Dreams From My Father" by President Barack Obama.
"Dreams from My Father" is a moving memoir by Barack Obama of his traumatic journey to discover his heritage, from Kansas to Kenya. "Dreams from My Father" is available in regular print, large print or you can listen on CD. Copies of the book can be picked up at Butler's L. W. Nixon Library, El Dorado's Bradford Memorial Library, The El Dorado Senior Center or The Book Grinder in El Dorado, Wal-Mart, Amazon.com and other retailers.
All community members are also invited to join their neighbors and friends for book discussions and special events presented during the week of March 2 through March 5. One Book, One Community highlights include David A. Nichols, author of "A Matter of Justice: Eisenhower and the Beginning of the Civil Rights" and book discussions with Butler instructors Sonja Milbourn and Meg Heine. Lisa Cooley of the Butler County History Center, will speak on the role of Kansas in the Civil Rights Movement.
For more information, please call (316) 322-3235 or (316) 321-3363. All programs are free and open to the public. Community members can also find discussion guides and background information about "Dreams From My Father" and One Book, One Community online at www.kcfb.info or at all library branches and area bookstores/other partner organization locations.
