In basketball, it is always tough to beat a team twice in the same season.
On Nov. 21, the Grizzly basketball teams fell to Neosho, 73-69 for the women's game and 85-79 for the men. Both teams had defeated the Tigers just 11 days earlier in Chanute.
The women's game started with many Grizzlies in foul trouble sending starters Jessica Egwuagu, Austin, TX freshman, and Abby Fawcett, Wichita freshman, to the bench very early in the game. This meant trouble for the Grizzlies because the two combined for 46 points in their previous match-up against the Lady Tigers. Fawcett and Egwuagu combined for only 20 points in the end of this game. Although in foul trouble for much of the game, Egwuagu pulled down 13 rebounds for the night. Both teams were whistled fouls often, as they scored the majority of their points from the free thrown line.
Going into halftime, Butler trailed 34-27 with much hope for an improved second half.
Overall, the second half was played much better for the Lady Grizzlies. Butler out-scored Neosho 42-39 in the second half which seems to be a common theme for the team. The second half spurt of energy was just not enough to finish the Lady Tigers. The win gave Neosho their first of the season and it was hard to believe that they fell to the Lady Grizzlies at home by 11 points.
Alysia Hart, Goddard sophomore, carried the team in scoring with 20 points on the night and going 6/9 from the free throw line.
The Grizzly men were up next, they defeated the Tigers 94-81 in their first meeting. From a fan's standpoint, you would have thought Butler was playing Syracuse University by the way Neosho's uniforms appeared with much resemblance to the Orange.
Throughout the entire night the Grizzlies had trouble defending Neosho's Anthonio Bostic, who scored 16 points in the first meeting. This time he scored that amount in the first half. Bostic finished with 26 points on the night.
Overall this time around, the game was much closer. The Grizzlies managed to hold a one point lead at halftime, 40-39.
Troy Pierce, Emporia sophomore, led the way with 20 points on the evening with support from Caleb Walker, Hutchinson sophomore, who contributed with 18 points.
Despite edging out the Tigers in the first half by one, the Grizzlies fell behind in the second half and were out-scored 46-39 in the half.
The loss was the Grizzlies second of the season and first at home. Head Coach Mike Bargen mentioned after the game that Neosho had a few shots bounce in their way and they came out hungry for this game.
