Many new programs are arising here at Butler Community College. One that hit over the holidays is Adopt a Grizzly for Thanksgiving.
The thought behind this program is that it's a holiday and everybody should feel wanted. This Thanksgiving many residents that live too far away to go home were able to be adopted. They could have been adopted by either a student or a staff member.
It was a great start. They had so many adopters willing to help out that all the residents that were interested were able to spend it with someone.
"It was neat because there were so many volunteers. We plan to keep this program going and hoping to interest more next year," Tina Krau, Residents Life Director said.
Dr. Michael Osterbuhr adopted two kids, Kelvin Musgrove and Victoria Watson. They went to Beaumont, KS. They ate at the Beaumont Hotel and then took the two out to see the wind mill farm just south of Beaumont. After there they went back to Wichita and watched a movie at the Warren.
"We stopped to see the Keeper of the Plains statue and were disappointed that the fire ring had already been done, and then drove back to El Dorado. It was fun," Osterbuhr, Director of Academic Achievement Programs & Services said.
Some other kids also went home with friends. Deborah Jackson from Miami, FL., went home with Kailee Dettmann.
"I brought Deb home with me for Thanksgiving break. It was new for her in my 1A town. I came from a class of 24, and her from Miami, two very different worlds. No matter, it was still a fun time," Dettman, returning sophomore from Burlingame said.
I also visited with others who were able to go home with other for the holiday. All had a great time.
Next year will hopefully be better, but now that more people know, maybe more will get involved in the holiday season.
