On Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., the Nursing Department at Butler Community College is having their Nursing Pinning Ceremony in the gymnasium.
"At the ceremony, we actually give them their nursing pin," Kerri Smith, Nursing Department Administrative Assistant said. "This is what allows them to work as a registered nurse."
The Butler Community College Nursing Program started in 1967 and has had a graduating class every semester.
The ceremony is a graduation ceremony for nursing students who completed the required curriculum and received their associates degree in nursing.
"After they complete their degree here, we have a program called 'The Plan' which allows students to get prerequisites done so they can get into the BSN program at Wichita State University," Smith said.
Nursing students are required to complete 72 credit hours to obtain their degree. They spend one semester working on prerequisites and three or four semesters on their degree courses.
Students must have a background check done before they are permitted to work in clinics or come in contact with clinical patients.
The students must also have a complete immunization record, purchase malpractice insurance and comply to several other Butler Community College requirements.
I think the nursing students earned their degree," Smith said. "It is a very intense and difficult program to get into and the BCC nursing program is well-known in hospitals here in Kansas."
The Butler Community College Nursing Department currently has 49 students graduating this semester.
