The Butler Community College students and staff have worked hand in hand doing several fundraising events for multiple organizations. Friday, April 18, they will get together once again for the "March of Dimes March for Babies."
The event is being held at East Park in El Dorado. Registration begins at 5 p.m. The march begins at 6 p.m. There will be a short walk and a long walk.
The March of Dimes is the leading non-profit organization for pregnancy and baby health. They are dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. According to marchofdimes.com, currently prematurity affects half a million babies a year. Not only are there problems at birth, there are also long-term side effects that can cause issues throughout life.
Famous Footwear is helping out the March for Babies by donating $5 for every pair of Dr. Scholl's Women's Wonder, Men's Triumph and Women's Grace shoes bought.
April 12, Denny Hamlin, Nascar driver, will drive the Fed Ex Kinkos car, at the Subway Fresh Fit 500 in Phoenix, AZ. The whole Fed Ex team will be decked out in specially designed uniforms to show support for the March for Babies.
Hamlin will be wearing a helmet designed by 5-year-old Tiffany Bell, who was born at 29 weeks and 6 days to a Fed Ex worker. The helmet was sold on Ebay after the race.
The March of Dimes has been changing lives since President Franklin Roosevelt founded it in 1938. Thirteen researchers for the March of Dimes have received Nobel Prizes in the past six decades.
There are several fundraisers throughout the year for March of Dimes, but this is one in El Dorado that the entire student body, staff, and community members can take part in and make a difference in thousands of babies' lives.
At the end of the event there will be free pizza and ice cream for those participating. To join the Butler team or make a donation, contact Amy Kerschner, BOE ext. 3111.
