Once again the Grammys have come and gone. But some may start to wonder where the awards came from and how they are awarded. Futhermore, why do some artists not recieve awards?
The awards started in 1959 and the artists that are awarded are not voted on by their successes throughout the year or by the fans that have contributed to their success. They are awarded by the recording academy that think the artists had a large contributions to the music industry.
It is a big deal in the entertainment world to recieve one of the 108 phonograph statues, commonly known as a Grammy.
The Grammy statue looks like a phonograph. The definition of a phonograph is an instrument for reproducing sounds by means of the vibration of a needle following a spiral groove on a revolving disc, according to www.grammy.com
The awards were initially called The Gramophone awards but were eventually shortened to the Grammys.
While the Grammys are a big deal, not everyone who has had a major influence in the music industry recieves one.
Diana Ross who had 18 number one singles throughout the four decades of her career has never been awarded a Grammy.
Aaliyah has sold over 30 million albums and had a seven year career but has never gotten to hold a statue of her own.
Buddy Holly died the year that the Grammys first started, so he was never elligiable to receive one despite his success.
The only Grammy that Ciara has even been able to accept was for a song that wasn't even hers. Missy Elliots video for Lose Control was awarded and Ciara had a small part in the video.
Of the eight years that The Doors were together, they never got a Grammy either.
Bob Marley has never gotten a Grammy but has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
These are just a few of the many artists who have never gotten the award. Others include, Jessica Simpson, G-Unit, Led Zepplin, Lynrd Skynrd, Queen, Jewel, The Who and Tupac Shakur.
Although these artists have never gotten Grammys, their contributions to the music industry are still well known. The entertainment industry is made up of more than just Grammy winners.
