The first art exhibit of the semester opened in the Erman B. White Gallery in the 700 building on Monday, January 28. The exhibit features the digital photography of Nora Tejada and will be on display until Feb. 25.
The exhibit is entitled "Picturing Kansas and New York" and features digital photos from Kansas and New York City.
"Some of the photos are from Kansas. Living in this area, we can all relate to those photos," Valerie Haring, Lead Art Instructor said.
Tejada is a Butler alum, where she received an Associates in Arts. She then went on to Kansas University where she received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in painting. Aside from being a Butler alum, she is also Haring's first cousin.
"In a lot of ways, she and I are like sisters," Haring said.
Tejada has lived in NYC for a few years now, and relates her pictures of Kansas and New York to each other.
"Even some of the New York scenes, to me, have a sense of openess. She tries to get that sense of isolation, that sense of space," Haring said.
Haring mentioned that even in NYC where there are people everywhere, Tejada can capture vast spaces, reminiscent of wide, open spaces found in Kansas.
Every one of the 36 pieces in the show is for sale for $100 each.
"She's priced it for the El Dorado family. Her work would sell for much more in New York," Haring said.
Her photos span a wide variety of items and locations, including Greensburg, KS after the tornado last year and pictures of Coney Island in New York.
"I also have to admit that I'm attracted to the (almost) instant gratification of digital photography," Tejada stated on a statement hanging in the gallery.
The Erman B. White Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
"I think it's a very handsome show," Haring said. "There's a real sense of unity with all the pieces."
