Youth against experience. This describes The Grizzly Mens basketball team at the Hardee's/P.A.R.C. Thanksgiving Tournament at Three Rivers Community College Nov. 22-24.
Butler took three sophomores, eight freshman and a first year head coach into the gym of one the most celebrated junior college basketball programs in the country. Butler left with one win and two losses.
On Thanksgiving Day, Butler found itself in a rematch with number 13 Iowa Western. The taller, more experienced Reivers dominated the game 100-60.
The Friday game pitted first year Grizzly head coach Mike Bargen's 6 wins versus 37 year Three Rivers head coach Gene Bess's 1034 wins. This was also Butler's third game in three games against NJCAA highly ranked opponents.
Blue Springs, Mo. freshman big man Logan Stutz felt right at home in his home state scoring 24 points on 5 for 11 shooting and 14 of 16 from the free throw line. Stutz also pulled down five boards
The Grizzlies also took care of the ball well, giving up 19 turnovers, only 3 more than Three Rivers. However, the Grizzlies could not overcome a 41-17 rebounding advantage and 71.1 percent shooting from the field for the Raiders.
Number three Three Rivers won the game 84-59.
In the final game of the tournament for Butler, The Grizzlies faced the last minute replacement for East Central, Arkansas Tech JV. The Grizzlies won that game 85-75, ending their holiday weekend on a high note.
On Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday Dec. 2, the Grizzlies traveled to Coffeyville for the Jayhawk Shootout. Saturday, Butler faced Jayhawk conference foe Neosho County at 9 a.m. Sunday, Butler found itself reaquainted with former Grizzly head coach Steve Eck who is now at the helm in Cowley County. That game was at 3 p.m.
Butler will be at home on Tuesday Dec. 4 against Central Christian JV and will end the semester in the Power Plant in a rematch with Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. Butler will try to avenge the highly controversial Nov. 15 road loss to the Mavericks on Saturday, Dec. 8.
