A truly fiesta-like spirit filled the theater on Friday, Oct. 13 at the first instrumental concert of the year. The concert featured performances by the Concert Band, Butler Big Band, Cruise Control and Command Performance. While not every song selection was Latin-inspired, a great deal were.
The Concert Band opened the show with a song entitled "Fanfare for the Third Planet." My favorite piece that was performed by the Concert Band, however, was "Latin Holiday." I just loved the upbeat sound of the song and the audience seemed to particularly enjoy this song as well.
Following the Concert Band was the Butler Big Band, which is a jazz ensemble. I really enjoyed their performance as well, especially the song "Florenando."
Cruise Control performed next. Cruise Control consisted of Roger Lewis on trumpet, special guest Phil Carr on piano, special guest Roberto Bernardinello on bass, Christopher Corbett on drums and vocals by Jade Park, Briana Cain and Cory Chapman. Cruise Control's performance made me feel as though I was sitting in a trendy piano jazz lounge somewhere. The singers were all dressed up which added to the lounge feel. I really enjoyed their performance and really thought that the singing added to the whole instrumental performance.
Command Performance ended the show. Two of their songs were Latin-inspired: "Conga" and "Hot, Hot, Hot." "Conga" was probably my favorite song by Command Performance and the rest of the audience seemed to enjoy it too.
Overall, I think that the instrumental concert was very enjoyable. It was the first Butler instrumental show that I attended, and I was very impressed. I loved the variety that the different groups brought to the performance and I really liked the fact that vocal accompaniment was used.
I encourage everyone to attend the next instrumental performance at Butler. They do an amazing job and are truly talented at what they do.
