A smile can say a thousand words

Walking down the many pathways and hallways of Butler, there are an abundance of people. Including freshman with their little maps and puzzled looks, and sophomores that are still attempting to wake from their snooze in math class.
One thing that is scarcely witnessed is a simple smile. C'mon now guys, it can't be that bad!
I am one of those goofy talkative kids that often was punished and chastised as a child for my "outgoing enthusiasm." I am not afraid, by any means, to be myself, even if that means making funny faces at people, that I may or may not know, through windows, or even playing volleyball in Wal-Mart.
I have a hard time understanding why people feel the need to all conform to this perfect mold. It's ok not to be Miss America. In the same manner, if that is what makes you happy, it's ok to BE Miss America.
As a matter of fact, I am overweight. I am not proud of this fact, nor am I boasting. However, I have no problem admitting it, or excepting criticism in that area. I am me. That's it! End of story! Take it or leave it!
If something makes you happy, then do it! There is nothing wrong with slapping a huge grin on your face, even if it means you are quoting old movies that no one even remembers any more.
In the same way, if something makes you unhappy, DO something about it. Pouting and whining doesn't help the situation, unless you are doing it to a parent and you are spoiled rotten.
"If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it," Mary Engelbreit.
I understand that there are people who don't have to be goofy and outrageous to have a good time. If that floats your boat, then go for it. But in our society being an odd ball, is generally seen as being an outcast. I don't see why being different is so wrong!
Don't get me wrong, I am in NO way approving the torture of someone if that is what makes you happy! If your happiness is fueled by being horrible to someone else, you might want to consider a new form of enjoyment.
Remember, smiles ARE contagious. It takes a lot to not at least pretend to smile back at someone who smiles at you. After a while, that pretending just might become genuine, and that person might turn into a best friend. Who couldn't use more friends?
So tomorrow when you are in your early morning class, trying to stay awake, turn to the person beside you and give 'em a smile. Pretty soon you'll be handing 'em out like they are going out of style!
It takes more facial muscles to frown than it does to smile. So, unless you like the work out, slap a smile on!
