Today marks the five year anniversary of September 11 and Americans everywhere are looking back on where they were on that fateful day.
I remember that day very well. I was a freshman in high school but I was not in classes that day. I was at the Kansas State Fair performing in a horse show.
It was the end of my first year competing with my mare, April Imprint. So, I was still a very novice rider and just happy to get out of class to ride my horse.
I vaguely remember when the state fair announcer told us that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers.
The reason I didn't pay much attention was the fact that I was too busy worrying about April's performance in the next class. Also I had no idea what the World Trade Center was or where it was located. Then, once my class was over the announcer told us that the other tower had been hit.
As the day went on more people were talking about it and I started to wonder what exactly was going on. Luckily, the state fair office had a TV and I made a trip down to see what had happened. After watching the footage I couldn't believe what I saw.
Shortly after, I went back to April's stall and was given some news from my mother. That day my dad was suppose to fly to Cincinnati but his plane was grounded. After hearing that I knew that this was a huge deal.
For most people the one moment that will stick out in their memory of September 11, 2001 is the first time that they heard what had happened or saw the TV footage that was everywhere of the second plane hitting the towers collapsing.
Although that was not the case for me. My moment happened later that day. I was riding April in the practice arena and the announcer was playing the national anthem so, of coarse, I stopped riding and sat there in respect. But there was a man in the arena that was working his horse from the ground and did not stop his horse.
That outraged me, I couldn't believe that someone did not have enough respect for our country to stop what he was doing to acknowledge our national anthem. The reason for the national anthem at that point in time was to honor all of those that werer suffering at that moment. And it just really makes me mad that even after a huge tradgedy people are still thinking about themselves. But maybe that's just me.
