Every new school year brings changes. Different students, different attitudes and this year quite a few different teachers.
Butler Community College has employed nine new full time faculty members. The new teachers are at several of the BCC campuses including Butler of El Dorado, Butler of Andover and Butler of McConnell.
Romana Becker, Director of Faculty/Staff Development feels confident that the new group of faculty will be successful in their first full year of teaching.
"They are a great group of people. I think they will be wonderful teachers," Becker said.
She also believes that the newcomers to the faculty are also eager to begin the new year.
"They are very enthusiastic to begin teaching," Becker said.
Shiva Kumar, Newton, has been here for two years, but officially started as full time last spring semester. Kumar is in the Information Technology Department where he teaches a variety of multi-media.
"I have taught HTMO, 3D, Action Script and Java Script. I have pretty much taught most multimedia and am very interested in digital media," Kumar said.
Butler is also offering massage therapy classes. Margaret Smith, Andover, has just began teaching this semester. Smith has a National Certificate in Massage Therapy, is licensed in Washington where she just recently moved from and has been massaging for six years.
Smith will be teaching an Alterations and Health class and the reinstated Life Span class. The Life Span class teaches students massage therapy for newborns, pregnant women and hospice and geriatrics patients. Parents are welcome to attend the classes to learn how to massage and calm their newborns. This class also offers therapy involving incense.
Smith is delighted to begin teaching and has enjoyed her first couple days of school.
"I am really excited to be teaching here. The first day of school was great and I think the students had a really good time and were excited," Smith said.
Moving to a new state would be difficult for most, but Smith feels very grateful for the warm welcome from the staff at BCC.
"I had a great time meeting the staff. Everyone was very helpful and supportive. Im with a very enthusiastic group," Smith said.
The school year, as always, will continue to change and be different. The new faculty members will jump right in and be a part of the BCC family.
