Slam dunk! In a back and forth battle at the Power Plant the Butler Grizzlies came out on top and conquered the Dodge City Conquistadors. Kevin Menifee, McKeesport, Penn. sophomore, led all scorers with 28 points.
AJ Calvin, Detroit, Mich. sophomore, chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds, and an electrifying slam dunk near the end of the second half that provided the Grizzlies with a lot of energy to finish the game strong.
Head Coach Dennis Helms said of the game, "It was a hard fought game between two teams with a 3-8 record (in conference play). The quality of the game did not reflect the teams' records."
Boy was he right. A slam dunk by Menifee early in the first half literally blew the roof off the building.
Dodge City Conquistador Corey Lewis proved that he was a threat, but that he could be contained, he scored only 9 points in the first half, but did attempt to mount a comeback in the second half scoring 12 and ending the game with 21 points.
But consistent play off of the bench by Lance Harris, Wichita freshman, helped to thwart the comeback.
The Grizzlies shot an outstanding 46 percent from the field and an even better 50 percent from behind the three-point line. They decimated the Conquistadors in the rebound department, out-rebounding them 40-29.
